WTF Paris, I Love You

Dreamy, cinematic love stories begin in Paris. WTF love stories have their beginnings there too.

It was the spring of 2016. We could still board planes on a whim and drink wine on nine hour flights to Paris. The thought alone makes me feel like my head's full of tannins… My boss babe of a friend and I decided to jet off for a glorious 10 days to the City of Love, where the cocktails were strong and the foie gras so good they tasted like crime.

Some advice? Don’t let said friend do your brows after those cocktails. I don’t know what my past self was thinking - she wasn’t! It was at this moment, when I was plastered and laughing uncontrollably, that I felt the time was right to hurl a confession at my friend by telling her, “Hey, I feel lonely.”

Now D is an empathetic soul. She listened and solved with the resolve of someone with liquor solutions warming her heart. “Obviously, what you need to do is go on Tinder. IN PARIS!” Her eyes sparkled mischievously.

NO. WTF, I could barely order a crêpe and café crème for breakfast. “How about… I don’t?” So I Facebook messaged my ex and called it a night.

I already had a cat. Where was I going to find the guy?

D does not give up, and why would she? We are bound by strings of stubbornness and even fate got roped into it this time. “T, let’s go to an art show! This Korean artist I follow on IG just so happens to be in Paris!”

She ended up taking me to Love Is, and as we waited in line, she pointed to Puuung’s work. “That’s going to be you one day, babe.”

I didn’t hate the idea. We chased the show down with more cocktails and giggled about the complete biscuit of a server, as we walked past the glimmering Eiffel Tower. Climbing the four flights of stairs up to our flat, the air was already tinged with change.

I was back in Vancouver for a week. Then I went on Tinder.
